Creating and Configuring Digital Input Device
Scenario: You want to configure a Digital Input device.

Workflow diagram:
Prerequisites:
- Digital Input Device is installed and configured.
- Certificate is created From System Management Console.
- System Manager is in Engineering mode.
- System Browser is in Management View.
Steps:
1 – Create and Start Digital Input Driver
- Depending on where to add the driver, select one of the following:
- Project > Management System > Servers > Main Server > Drivers
- Project > Management System > FEPs > [FEP Station] > Drivers
- In the Object Configurator tab, click New and select New Digital Input Driver.
a. In the New Object dialog box, enter a name and description.
b. Click OK.
- The Digital Input Driver displays in the System Browser below the Drivers and is selected.
NOTE: After creating the required drivers, restart the active project from the System Management Console (SMC).
- In the Operation tab, navigate to the Driver Status property and click Start.
- The Digital Input driver is created and started.
2 – Configure a Digital Input Driver
- Click the added Digital Input driver and click the Driver Editor tab.
- Open the Driver Settings expander.
- A description for the driver displays, however, you can enter a description.
- In the Configuration Properties expander, proceed as follows.
- Select the Device Request Timeout field, enter 3000 (value in milliseconds).
- Select the Check Status Rate field, enter 5000 (value in milliseconds).
- Click Save .
- The parameters are configured for the Digital Input driver.
3 – Create Digital Input Field Network
- Select Project > Field Networks.
- The Object Configurator tab displays in the Primary pane.
- Click New and select New Digital Input Field Network.
- In the New Object dialog box, enter a name and description.
- Click OK.
- The field network appears in the Field Networks hierarchy.
- The Digital Input driver is automatically associated to the field network. In the Network Editor tab, under the Network Settings expander, you can see that the values are preselected, and the driver is already assigned.
4 – Create Digital Input Perle Device
- Select Projects > Field Networks > Digital Input Field Network.
- In the Network Editor tab, click Create .
- In the New object dialog box, enter a name and description.
- Click OK.
- In the Device Editor tab that displays, proceed as follows.
- In the Device Settings expander, enter a description.
- In the Configuration Properties expander, proceed as follows.
- In Serial Port Number field, enter the TruePort COM port number that the device is using. For more details, refer to the I/O Access Settings section.
NOTE: To check the COM ports that were used by the device, open the True Management Tool.
- Select Operational from the Device Mode drop-down list.
NOTE: The Device Mode can also be changed from the Extended Operation tab.
The following options available in the Device Mode drop-down list:
Disabled: In this mode, the driver does not process the messaging command and/or the device configuration change command, but will perform status checks for the device. The device remains in aDisconnected
state.
Operational: In this mode, the driver processes the messaging command, the device configuration change command, and performs status checks for the device. The device will be in aDisconnected
orConnected
state based on the connection state.
Administrative: In this mode, the driver processes the device configuration change command and performs status checks for the device. The device will be in aDisconnected
orConnected
state based on the connection state.
- Click Save .
- The Digital Input Perle device is created.
5 – Create a Digital Input Device
- Navigate to Project > Field Networks > Digital Input Field Network.
- Click the Network Editor tab.
- Click Create .
- In the New object dialog box, enter a name and description.
- Click OK.
- In the Device Editor tab that displays, proceed as follows
- In the Device Settings expander, enter a description for the device.
- Click the Configuration Properties expander.
- From the Alarm Number drop-down list, select the alarm number to be assigned to the Digital Input device.
- Click Save .
